Background of the Study

Computational discourse analysis has emerged as an invaluable tool for examining political communication by enabling systematic analysis of language use and rhetorical strategies. In Nigeria, political discourse is marked by diverse linguistic styles, strategic messaging, and cultural influences reflective of its complex socio-political landscape (Chinwe, 2023). The application of computational methods permits the quantitative evaluation of political speeches, debates, social media interactions, and other public texts. Recent advancements in natural language processing and machine learning have enhanced the detection of patterns, sentiment, and framing techniques in political language (Okeke, 2024). These techniques reveal the persuasive strategies employed by political actors and their impact on public opinion. However, the heterogeneity of political language—accentuated by rapid media evolution and code-switching—presents challenges in achieving consistent and accurate analysis (Nwosu, 2025). This study assesses the effectiveness of computational discourse analysis tools in Nigerian political communication, focusing on their ability to uncover underlying narratives and ideological positions. The findings aim to contribute to transparent political processes by informing academic research and public policy formulation.

Statement of the Problem

Despite promising capabilities, significant challenges exist in applying computational discourse analysis to Nigerian political communication. Existing tools often struggle to capture the full spectrum of rhetorical devices, cultural nuances, and code-switching inherent in political language (Chinwe, 2023). The rapid evolution of communication channels and shifts in public sentiment further complicate consistent analysis, sometimes leading to inaccuracies in sentiment detection and misinterpretation of political intent (Okeke, 2024). Additionally, the scarcity of context-specific datasets limits these tools’ capacity to reflect the true diversity of political discourse in Nigeria. Addressing these challenges is imperative for developing more robust computational models that accurately capture the complexities of political communication (Nwosu, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of computational discourse analysis tools in Nigerian political communication.

2. To identify key challenges in applying these tools to complex political language.

3. To recommend improvements for enhancing the accuracy and contextual sensitivity of computational models.

Research Questions:

1. How effective are current computational tools in analyzing Nigerian political discourse?

2. What are the primary challenges in capturing cultural and rhetorical nuances in political communication?

3. How can computational discourse analysis be improved for more accurate political language assessment?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant in advancing the understanding of political communication in Nigeria through computational analysis. The research outcomes will offer valuable insights into the effectiveness of existing tools and propose improvements that can enhance political transparency and accountability. The findings are expected to inform academic research, political strategy, and public policy, fostering a more informed and engaged citizenry (Chinwe, 2023; Okeke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is confined to the assessment of computational discourse analysis in Nigerian political communication, focusing exclusively on the application and improvement of digital analytical tools for political texts.

Definitions of Terms:

• Computational Discourse Analysis: The use of computer-based methods to analyze language use in discourse.

• Political Communication: The process by which political information is transmitted and interpreted.

• Rhetorical Devices: Techniques used in language to persuade or influence audiences.
